Extended Classifications in Innovator
What is it?
Extended Classification allows us to build a ‘tree’ structure of additional categories which can be applied to an item, e.g. a Part. Against each level of the classification tree, different properties can be assigned. For example, all electronic components can have a max temp property but resistors will also have a resistance property.
Setting extended classification and properties
The Parts screen now has an ‘Extended Classification’ section. Click the ‘…’ to set a classification:
Click the check box next to the most relevant classification, then click the tick top-lfet:
Once the classification is selected, the corresponding property fields will be shown (you will need to click the arrow icon to expand the box):
These fields then behave as normal Innovator fields. In the example of a Mechanical > Manufactured Part above, the base and plating materials can be searched from the available list of materials.
Searching for parts based on extended properties
To search for items based on the extended properties you will need to switch to ‘Advanced’ search mode:
Then click the ‘+’ to add a search criteria
Click the ‘…’ in the property field and you can then find the properties relevant to each part class:
Select the required property and click ‘Apply’.
You can then select the required criteria and click ‘search’ as normal.
Note: Extended property searches are generally slower than regular searches, so you may need to be a little patient.
